FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Find answers to commonly asked questions about recreational riding and becoming a member.

01
Where can i find trail riding in Ontario?

There are many trail riding groups across the province, often associated with a particular trail, and some advocating and supporting trail riders across the province for you to meet and join.  These groups often hold social events and work together to advocate for the use of the trails they enjoy and also help maintain them for everyone. You will find there are many different communities of trail users, including cyclists and hikers - some who are very sophisticated in their skills and experience in managing and maintaining trails.  Communities who work together often have the best experience by sharing and pooling their resources, and developing a good relationship with the local Conservation Authority, Forest or Trail Managers and Municipal Governments.

02
Can I engage in the Learn to Ride program if I don’t compete?

The Learn to Ride program is designed to be delivered to participants of any age in the Fundamentals through Learn to Compete stages of development.  The program focuses on the horse care and equestrian skills needed to advance in the sport and understand how to properly care for and ride horses (English or Western), developing appropriate skills as you advance.  The program can be engaged in without competition, and encourages well-rounded skills.

03
What should I look for in a Coach?

To learn how to ride, you can start by taking lessons at an accredited stable. Certified coaches have been trained and evaluated coaching equestrians and will provide instruction and guidance to help you develop your riding skills and knowledge of horsemanship. Look for a coach who is certified with an active EC Coach Status - signifying that they are trained, screened and insured - who specializes in the discipline or style of riding that you are interested in. Try an assessment lesson if possible, to give you and the coach an opportunity to get to know one another and see if your styles and personalities work well together.

04
does my membership cover other members of my family?

Membership includes personal liability and AD&D insurance that covers you, the holder.  If other members of your family will be riding or working with horses, they should also hold their own membership to be covered.  We offer junior, adult and family memberships for families with two children and two adults.

05
What Insurance Coverage do I need to trail ride?

Many trails in Ontario require those accessing the trails to hold personal liability insurance.  An OE membership automatically gives you:

  • $5,000,000 Personal Liability Insurance ($1,000 Property Damage Deductible), protecting you, the member, if you are sued by a third party because a horse that you own or lease, ride or handle non-commercially, causes property damage or bodily injury to a third party.  *Liability coverage is for non-commercial equine-related activities. Some limitations and exclusions apply. Coverage is in force 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and covers the member (Canadian resident) anywhere in the world. (Exclusions apply for members who are non-Canadian residents).
  • $40,000 Additional Death and Dismemberment coverage, covering you, the member, should you suffer a catastrophic injury, dismemberment, or death arising from equine-related activities. (Under the age of 90 and only available to Canadian Residents)

Additional coverage is available through your membership and by contacting Acera Insurance directly for any questions regarding coverage, limitations, or exclusions at 1-888-394-3330 (Equine Department).
